The Gross Clinic: Eakins

Thomas Eakins
"The Gross Clinic"
Oil on Canvas

Eakins aimed to paint things as he saw them rather than fluffing it with untrue depictions. Striving for truth, his realism is detailed with the shading and lighting. This painting resembles "The Anatomy Class". The point is that scientific and medical advancement can enhance and improve lives. The painting was incredibly gruesome for its time. What is most interesting about this is that it does not strike me as vulgar, where as in its time it would be considered nausea provoking.
